Seismic Weapons
The Seismic Weapons
**September 21, 2002 - completed on March 1, 2006 **
It all starts with a statement by William Cohen, US Secretary of Defense, dated April 2, 1997 (reported by my old friend from Poitiers, researcher Gérard Morin):
Others [terrorists] are engaging even in an eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves. So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations. It's real, and that's the reason why we have to intensify our[counterterrorism] efforts.
Secretary of Defense William Cohen at an April 1997 counterterrorism conference sponsored by former Senator Sam Nunn. Quoted from DoD News Briefing, Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen, Q&A at the Conference on Terrorism, Weapons of Mass Destruction, and U.S. Strategy, University of Georgia, Athens, Apr. 28, 1997.
Translation:
Other terrorists are engaged in a type of "ecological" action where they can alter the climate, trigger earthquakes, volcanic eruptions using electromagnetic waves. Many ingenious minds are currently working to imagine ways of terrorizing entire nations. All of this is real and that is the reason why we have intensified our efforts in the war against terrorists.

Plain translation: We know that all this works since we have been experimenting with it for a long time. The technological means to implement remain affordable and out of all proportion to a nuclearization effort.
Note the mention of earthquakes and the triggering of volcanic eruptions. This may seem crazy, but ultimately a minimal, well-localized cause can generate a cataclysm if the latter is ready to trigger. Earthquakes are linked to plate slips along faults. We know that an earthquake will inevitably occur along the San Andreas fault in California and that its effects will be devastating. We do not know when this will happen, which also amounts to saying that we do not know a priori the energy that would suffice to trigger the phenomenon. The closer the snap, the weaker this energy will be. The technique allows action in the deep layers of the ground with electromagnetic waves. The Russians had built an enormous generator called "Pamir" in the seventies, of which I had seen photos in 1983 in Chicago, during an MHD congress, which could be transformed onto a large truck. It was one of the n variants of the Sakharov generator, with flux compression. This one had the shape of a camembert box six meters in diameter. These generators, which we later learned equipped the electromagnetic cannons installed on the ground by the Russians, are also called Pavloski generators. Their operation, by "flux compression" is analogous to Sakharov's MK1 system that everyone is now beginning to know. A chemical explosive is fired at the center, which interacts with a powerful solenoid (for the specialist: in a regime of high magnetic Reynolds number).

This system "allowed strong electric currents to circulate in the ground". Officially the device was presented as a system for analyzing the situation of terrain by measuring over long distances and at great depth the electrical conductivity of the ground. We now know that a variation of this conductivity is the sign of the imminence of an earthquake. In '83 I had discussed in Chicago with the Russian managers of this project, former students of Velikhov, himself a student of Sakharov. I realize today that such a system could allow not only to study the pre-seismic situation of terrain but eventually to trigger the earthquake. Thus "the geophysical study" constituted the "screen project" hiding the true purpose of this technology, unimaginable by a non-specialist.
Physically speaking these systems allow energy transfers. The starting energy remains that of the explosive which feeds the Pamir generator. This system allows a part of this energy to be transported by this means via electromagnetic waves to great depth. If the fault is not ready to give way, significant energy would be needed to trigger the earthquake. The system, used in moderation, can allow testing the terrain, a bit like when you give light impulses on a balanced block to see if it is ready to slide into a ravine. Military-geophysicists can thus secretly locate around the world, in potentially "hostile" territories or those "to be brought to heel", "sensitive regions" where a more muscular action could trigger a devastating earthquake. To trigger the earthquake it then suffices to modify by heating the nature of the terrain at a point that serves as a "retainer" in the fault, as a "lock". The snap is then provoked.
**March 1, 2006 **
At the end of February 2006 a program was broadcast, entitled "the angers of the climate" of which I was able to obtain a copy thanks to one of my readers. In it the various catastrophes that have occurred since 2002 are reviewed. Christmas 2005: the Tsunami. A few months later, the earthquake in Pakistan which caused tens of thousands of deaths. An American geologist suggested that the phenomenon of earthquakes could be triggered by earth tides linked to the influence of the Moon. A clarification: the apparent movement of the Moon, linked to the rotation of the Earth induces an earth tide of the order of 30 to 50 cm.
The Earth-Moon distance is not constant. The tidal effect varies as 1/r3. Max distance: 407,000 km. Min distance: 365,000 km
DF/F = - 3 Dr/r
Result: a variation of the tidal effect of 30% which is not nothing.
The effect is accentuated when the satellite and the sun are aligned. If the Moon eclipses the Sun and is moreover at perigee, the effect is maximal. The fellow therefore predicted a certain number of earthquakes of which some did indeed trigger. For example the last major earthquake in San Francisco. He was banned from media and university given the panics he could create with each of his predictions. Effect: eclipse of the sun by the moon plus position of the Moon at its perigee: migratory flows. Simple remark, but a logical remark nonetheless.
Same remark made during the program: the fact that the tectonic plate system can reverberate phenomena at very great distance, including in delayed fashion. Quite simply "because we don't know how it works". Entirely possible.
Above I mentioned my encounter in the USA with Russians who had shown me, during an MHD colloquium in the early eighties, photos of a strange machine shaped like a large camembert, mounted on a truck. The program's producers showed photos of this machine, baptized "earthquake machine" and broadcast a film of its operation. I hope I will soon be able to pass on the corresponding extract here.
The MHD generator in operation

Computer-generated image showing a Pavlowsky machine (or "Pamir" machine)
In the film images with text appear fleetingly. By opening one's eyes wide one can identify its various components. There are four identical elements, joined to form a battery. The circular devices are solenoids. On the right, four solid-fuel rockets, probably doped with cesium or sodium (substances with a low ionization potential). This battery of rockets is named "plasma generator".
The operation is brief: less than five seconds, which allows high combustion temperatures, perhaps above 3000° (3900° according to the technical data unearthed by Eric Dezoète after my text was put online). These four combustion chambers blast into linear Faraday generators, not visible, then the jets are directed into the atmosphere. The drawing above shows the method of fixing the assembly onto a "plate" intended to be mounted on a mobile support, in this case a large truck. The straight parts show the abutments against which these three "propulsors" push. I think the unit thrusts of these systems must be a little under ten tons each, which requires a solid fixation and the fact that these jets be directed towards the ground.
When one watches the film one notes an ejection of hot gas, at the chambers, just before shutdown. This corresponds to the opening of "chapels" which create a gas leak in the chambers, drop the pressure there and cause the combustion to stop (for the operation of the "chapels" see "around the world in eighty minutes", page 14). And this before all the solid propellant is burned. The residual layer of unburned material thus plays the role of thermal insulator. When the pressure drops, the temperature does as much and combustion stops.

Pawlosky generator, start of combustion
The drawing that is on the camembert indicates without ambiguity that it is an electrical generator.
*Why this camembert shape? *
These are enormous solenoids, non-superconducting, made of simple red copper which are initially fed by the discharge of a battery of capacitors. This battery is seen on the left of a Pamir-2 installation

Ground installation. On the left, the capacitor bank for initial excitation
The Faraday generator then operates in self-excitation regime, in the sense that the current produced is largely diverted towards the solenoids, reinforcing the inducing field, whose electromotive field V B . The value of the magnetic field reached is fairly high which entails considerable forces, capable of bursting the coils. These are designed in such a way as to present maximum resistance, that is to say circular.
Even during such brief operating times, these solenoids, traversed by large currents, give off quite a few calories. These camemberts must not only absorb the stress but behave as heat sinks. The MHD nozzle, linear, with continuous electrodes also plays the role of heat sink.

The generator in full action
The glow produced allows better discernment of the metal structure situated near the front of the truck. In my opinion it is a "derrick" which allows, before testing, to dig vertical wells in which will remain permanently not tubes but solid augers, of simple scrap iron, which will serve as electrodes by going to apply the electrical voltage without pressure loss in layers located at a depth which in my opinion could go up to several hundred meters. Before testing the truck behaves as a mobile drilling device and its powerful engine could then set the drill bit in motion.
In the film one sees a diagram that one can attempt to decode. The discharge seems injected into a horizontal fissuring, probably corresponding to an aquifer layer. The passage of the current vaporizes this water and produces a lifting effect of the layer. If one follows the indicated drawing, this movement aims to unjam a plate joined by a vertical fissure, along which shear forces are exerted.

These plate slips can then themselves propagate over great distance (shear wave) and trigger an earthquake well beyond the solicited zone.
In the USA the Russians had presented this machine as "a system allowing the measurement of the electrical conductivity of the ground" adding "that a variation of conductivity could be the warning sign of an imminent earthquake". As a "measuring instrument" this seemed nonetheless rather brutal. A measuring instrument does not need to operate for 5 to 10 seconds.

"Measuring instrument"
It seems entirely logical that physical, electromagnetic parameters of the subsoil of a region can be modified at the imminent approach of an earthquake. It would then be logical to place all around a region at risk sensors either passive (measurement of electric field) or active (measurement of electrical conductivity of the subsoil, permittivity, etc...). But in the second case there would in my humble opinion be no need to bring such intensities into play for so long. The measurement methods, acting moreover during brief durations and bringing tiny energies into play would be incapable of provoking the slightest phenomenon, including a "micro-earthquake". As an instrument of "geophysics" this MHD generator is not a measuring instrument, but truly an instrument *allowing action on the underground environment. *
In the film, this "earthquake machine" is presented as capable of relieving tensions by creating "micro-earthquakes". This then starts from an excellent sentiment, but as a commentator remarks in the film "when one plays with Mother Nature one never quite knows how far it can go".
The film evokes an effect going as far as 50 km deep. There is talk of sorts of "lightning impacts".
Various remarks:

**Recording of the power output, over time. On the x-axis: seconds, on the y-axis megawatts. ** - A power, so slowly variable over time, is not a priori likely to generate waves.
-
If one banks on the primary, inducing effect, the current and the steam release by Joule effect can be localized in fissures running through the rock, a bit anywhere.
-
If the machine really creates an onset of slip, this can propagate to distances and depths a priori unlimited. Simple releases of tensions, in cascade, with propagation from near to near.
In conclusion the Pamir machine could very well prove capable of creating earthquakes, including significant earthquakes. The significance does not depend on the machine but on the quantity of energy stored in the fault, following a slip, accumulated over centuries or millennia.
The film broadcast on television puts forward the idea that this machine would have been "sold to the Americans" and that "no one knows what became of it". That is a bit of journalistic invention. The truth is simpler. These studies gave rise to a contract and a collaboration between the Institute of High Temperatures of Moscow and the Air Force, that's all.
One finds a description and technical data concerning these generators on the Internet. They can be used as a power source for a limited duration (up to 10 seconds) and supply for example directed-energy weapons implanted on the ground, for example lasers. Apparently each camembert can develop 5 megawatts which would represent about twenty megawatts for an installation with four joined units.

Victor A. Novikov is the head of the department of pulsed MHD generators of the Institute of High Temperatures of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. See the description of the Pamir 3 system (15 MW). Documentation unearthed by Eric Dezoète.

This system weighs 12 tons. The nozzles blast at an angle of 19°. The seeding is indeed obtained with cesium nitrate (10% of the solid propellant charge). The thermal power released is 600 MW. The temperature in the combustion chambers is 3900° K which allows the plasma to have good electrical conductivity (50-60 Mhos/m) despite operation at thermodynamic equilibrium. Given the high value of the magnetic field a strong pressure, of thirty bars, is imposed in the MHD nozzle to remain in a regime of low Hall parameter. This strong pressure in the MHD section is confirmed by the conical shape of the jet, in the open air (here in a test hall):
At the outlet the plasma temperature still reaches 3000°. The generator can deliver fifteen to twenty-five thousand amperes under a voltage of the order of a kilovolt. The graphite electrodes are replaced at each test. It seems that the solenoids, fitted with 64 windings, manage to develop several teslas. 4.8 T at maximum. The whole machine acts as a heat sink and cools naturally after each firing.
March 2, 2006: When reality exceeds fiction
We have understood, in 2006, the system that allowed the use of a pulsed MHD generator (operating from 5 to 10 seconds, which has existed for half a century), used to vaporize the water of a water table near a "transform" fault to make it a seismic weapon. It is a relatively rustic technology, of which we have described the broad outlines, which is frightening.
Let us think. This system could perfectly well be applied to the bottom of the seas. Modifying a submarine accordingly poses no technical problem. This same submarine could have a very "banalized" appearance. The rocket engines used, with solid propellant, work very well in water and under pressure. Thirty bars correspond to 300 meters of depth. It would thus be perfectly possible to implement a generator of the Pamir type in the vicinity of a fault and far from the coasts. Its operation would not be detected at the surface.
Tectonic activity continues under the sea. Let us take for example Iceland. It is traversed by a fault oriented south-southwest - North-northeast which extends the fault of the mid-ocean ridge. This region of the globe is the seat of very strong tectonic tensions. One could say that it would be relatively easy to trigger an earthquake in Iceland by acting in the vicinity of the coast, following the underwater extension of the fault. With the following drawings I have tried to show what a earthquake-triggering submarine could look like.

**Placement of a seismic weapon near the coasts **
Let us add that at the envisaged depths: one hundred, two hundred, three hundred meters, the deployment of autonomous divers leaving the submarine then rejoining a "saturation chamber" poses no problem. Such interventions are common near offshore oil platforms. We thus discover a new form of discrete warfare ("silent war") where weakening an adversary can consist in creating in his country "natural phenomena" which could, with astonishingly modest means, create destructive effects in his country, at great distance, and even in delayed fashion. Even to the point of subsequently offering one's "humanitarian aid", an operation possibly allowing a country to be taken completely in hand again.
All this seems so simple and logical that one can really wonder if it would not already have been implemented.
Here an effector has been evoked which consists in bringing to a boil the water of an aquifer, located either under the terrestrial surface or under the ocean floor, the energy being supplied by an MHD generator. It is clever and potentially effective. One thus uses the steam as a "jack". But there are other ways of creating shocks likely to trigger earthquakes by operating near faults, such as for example discreetly drilling then detonating a buried nuclear charge at a certain depth. I am thinking in particular of actions carried out near "sensitive" coasts.
Return to the 2003 text:
Same remark concerning a possible triggering of volcanism. The philosophy is the same: bring energy to depth. Before thinking of a volcano let us look at how a geyser works. I hung around quite a bit in Iceland many years ago with my son and with Maurice Kraft (who died intoxicated by a gas emanation, as did his wife Katia). The word geyser comes from the locality geisir, in Iceland, where these are numerous.

A geyser is a column that plunges into the depths of the earth at a place where there is a heat source. In Iceland the heat is everywhere. This column is filled with water. Very often it surfaces in a basin of greater or lesser size. One is surprised to discover that this water is tinted green by bacteria that live in it "consuming this energy" and not the energy of the sun. One does not moreover know very well whether terrestrial life would not have been born under these conditions that seem unbearable to us. Be that as it may, these bacteria die if the temperature falls below a certain threshold, perhaps eighty or ninety degrees. At any point of the column the water is close to boiling. The higher the pressure and the higher the temperature at which water can maintain itself in the liquid state, and vice-versa. I tell you this because all mountaineers know how difficult it is to cook pasta at high altitude, simply because the low pressure linked to altitude lowers the boiling temperature and that even in boiling water one has trouble provoking the chemical reactions of cooking the food because of this. In the geyser's water column the temperature increases with depth, simply because one is getting closer to the heat source. If boiling does not occur (the geyser then ceases to be active) it is because at any point the weight of the water column creates sufficient pressure to prevent boiling at the temperature that prevails at that depth.
But this system is unstable. The pressure that prevails in the column cannot be modified. It depends only on the geometry of the system, on the height of water. On the other hand the underground heat source can supply calories to the point of creating criticality. Then a bubble forms which rises towards the surface and provokes the boiling of the water that is in its path. The volume of steam that rises thus grows and can reach several cubic meters. When the bubble reaches the surface, the latter rises. Then the bubble bursts at its upper part (right figure) and this is what provokes the emission of a column of steam. Those who have seen geysers in operation know this phenomenon, fairly rapid, which extends over a time that is of the order of a second.
For the anecdote there exists a way of "reviving geysers", which Maurice Kraft used and which delighted my son who was ten years old at that time. I have unfortunately lost the photo we had taken of the phenomenon. The trick consists in emptying the contents of a bottle of dishwashing product into the geyser. This descends while lowering the value of the vaporization temperature. When the product reaches the bottom of the column, the geyser triggers and then produces tens of thousands of soap bubbles, the largest being able to reach about twenty centimeters in diameter.
A volcano has an operation analogous in the sense that it is a column of magma containing gas.

One can compare this magma to champagne. The gases that populate the surface of the Earth were moreover created by the degassing of volcanoes, then transformed by a phenomenon called "life". Volcanoes release many different gases, including quite a bit of CO2. Let us now take an "active" volcano, that is to say likely to enter into eruption periodically. Its lava column is in equilibrium in the manner of that of the geyser. In general it is linked at depth to a magmatic pocket. The mechanism that ensures the rise of magma in the chimney is the degassing which tends to accentuate as the rise proceeds. One then understands how it can be possible with the aid of pulsed microwaves at very low frequencies, capable of bringing thermal energy to great depth, to heat the magma and to make the system unstable, if it is close to its criticality.
If the Secretary of Defense William Cohen pronounced these words it is because he had excellent reasons to think that all this was feasible. I even think that if he said it, it is because it could already have been tested by American scientists (...).
Sept 23, 2002. free opinion (the author of the message preferred to remain anonymous):
As one can suppose that this American official, Cohen, does not say just anything, one is entitled to wonder if a seismic weapon would not already have been used somewhere with the foreseeable consequences. On this subject, one can note that the devastating earthquake in Armenia in December 1988 coincided surprisingly with the start of ethnic troubles in that region, also in 1988, between the Armenians and the Azeris (of Azerbaijan) and which were harbingers of the end of the USSR. Aware that the Union was heading towards breakup, could one imagine a hot-headed Soviet general using the toy described in your paper to "quell insurrection" in the region? Simple hypothesis.
The passage near the Earth of an iron asteroid, supernova debris, endowed with a very strong magnetic field. Supernovae, just before their brutal end, possess a central core made of iron, associated with a magnetic field of very high intensity, difficult to quantify (one hundred teslas or more, perhaps). The sun was born in a cluster of a few hundred stars which dispersed in a few tens of millions of years. Let us say 50 million years. Massive stars (20 solar masses) ejected the small ones by slingshot effect. In passing these massive stars had time to turn into supernovae, therefore to explode, before the cluster was dispersed. They therefore populated it with heavy elements (of which we are constituted). If certain supernovae can give birth by compression to residues in the form of neutron stars it is quite possible that in other cases the compression is not symmetrical enough to ensure the transformation of the iron core into a mass of neutrons in contact. The core would then have been dislocated. On the table of my office I have a mini-meteorite the size of a peanut which doubtless once inhabited the heart of a giant star and today constitutes a tiny fragment resulting from the disintegration of the latter. No one can prejudge the size of the fragments. On Earth some have landed which had respectable sizes (therefore the one that gave birth to the "meteor crater" in Arizona). It is entirely possible that larger ones could exist, ejected far from the sun, therefore then undetectable except in the final approach phase, since unlike comets they do not degas. Imagine that a supernova fragment the size of Phobos passes near the Earth, without hitting it. It would sweep it with its magnetic field. This would then be capable of acting on the terrestrial field to the point of making it topple, of inverting it. The successive inversions of the terrestrial magnetic field, observed by measurement of the paleomagnetism of lavas perhaps comes from there.
Physicists are still incapable of explaining "the sufficient reason" (as professor Pangloss would say) for the presence of a terrestrial field (0.4 gauss, if my memories are exact). For decades there has been talk of the "Dynamo effect".
Let us return to this story of a metallic asteroid which does not strike the Earth, but grazes it sufficiently close. It can at the moment of its passage create Laplace forces within the terrestrial magma. Even if these forces are not intense enough to appreciably modify the shape of our geoid they can be sufficient to trigger earthquakes, volcanism and even phenomena of even greater magnitude such as surgings or collapses of portions of the Earth's crust. Salt water is also conductive of electricity. Within it the Laplace forces would create fluid currents. One can imagine that this asteroid could thus provoke the end of civilizations, like that of a possible "Atlantis". I do not like these scientists who seek to reduce everything, to pass everything through their intellectual grinder by imagining that they know everything about everything, basing themselves on a knowledge they believe definitive. Our past remains quite mysterious. It is only very recently that our astrophysicists have envisaged that the sun could have been born in a cluster (Article by Serge Jodra: "Where have the sisters of the Sun gone?" in Ciel et espace of April 1998, no. 336 page 60). Before, astrophysicists thought that the sun was born alone in its corner. But in science, everything proceeds by "catastrophes" (from kata, beside, and strophedein, the groove). Scientific discourse resembles a record. From time to time an event causes the arm of the record player to jump, to change groove. A discourse is then brutally interrupted so that another follows, which eventually has nothing to do with the previous one. Another example: the brutal passage from "the theory of geosynclines" to that of plate tectonics, following the discovery of continental drift. In passing I would very much like someone to send me photocopies of pages of geology courses dating from before this discovery of continental drift (to be sent to J.P.Petit, villa Jean-Christophe, chemin de la Montagnère, 84120, Pertuis). I indeed belong to a generation that had to learn (by heart) this theory of "geosynclines" which was then found in the "geology" section of secondary education. It was surreal. One managed to explain how the bottom of lakes or seas came to form ... mountains. I would be delighted to bring them to the attention of readers so that younger ones see how knowledge can thus topple at the scale of a generation. Scientists (and in this case geologists) are like cats which, as everyone knows, have the art of "putting their droppings under the living room rug".
Scientific discourse is in fact a discourse of the religious type. Science has its priests, its Panglosses, like Hubert Reeves, great dispenser of stardust, like a modern sandman. His sentences begin with "one thinks that..." and for whoever knows how to follow discourses over long spans of time, they evolve, they too. You have doubtless heard the scientist say "that the myth of Atlantis" was simply linked to the explosion of the volcano of Santorini, in the Greek islands. I went there. Indeed it must have been something. The tidal wave that resulted perhaps pulverized some coastal civilizations. Plato perhaps also simply fabulated, unless it is a matter of the effect of the passage of this iron asteroid evoked above. Note one thing in passing. Suppose that this asteroid passes a short distance from the surface of the Earth. Too small, too little massive, it could engender no tidal phenomenon, although the tidal effects are as 1/r3. Not grazing our atmosphere it would create no aerological phenomenon (except that which would be due to a powerful stirring of our ionosphere by the Laplace forces, because the latter is ionized). Insofar as this asteroid would not degas (comets reveal themselves especially by their "hair" and begin to degas at some six hundred million kilometers from the Earth, after having crossed the orbit of Jupiter) it would even be possible that no one would notice it. And yet it would perhaps have been capable of provoking in one night the engulfment of an entire continent, that of the "Atlanteans".
There exists another thesis about the disappearance of an ancient civilization, due to the polytechnician Jacques Deruelle, published in a book entitled "Atlantis and its Megaliths", a work that went totally unnoticed. There exists between England and Norway a vast bank where the depth is less than 30 meters in places, I believe. It is the famous "Dogger Bank", well known to fishermen. Glaciations not only lower the level of the oceans but raise the ocean floors in the vicinity of glacial barriers. It is like when you press at one spot on a foam mattress. This slightly raises the neighboring part. When the ice melts, the glacier retreats. The sea level rises and the ocean floor sinks. There could have existed a civilization living in the Iron Age which would have clung to what has now become "Dogger Bank" by making it a .. polder. When it is a matter of preserving a territory, tens of thousands of men can work for centuries, even millennia to build dikes thirty meters high. All the more so as the sinking was progressive. The works could have begun from prehistory, from the end of that glaciation. And then one day an exceptional storm breaks the dam. In one night everything is engulfed. The following storms will complete the work. A few centuries later nothing will remain of a civilization that could have been flourishing and perhaps constitute those that were called "the Sea Peoples" and who caused serious trouble to Egypt at a certain time. Peoples very advanced in matters of navigation, with keeled ships, mastering iron (whereas the Egyptians, attacked, had only their bronze swords to face). There are perhaps fabulous things to discover by carrying out core samplings in the bottom of Dogger Bank. One does find masses of mammoth bones off Denmark, which date from the time when these plains were still emerged.
