UFOs and the media

February 14, 2009

A reader has just sent me a video, posted on Karl Zero's website, where you can see the "journalist" Franz-Olivier Giesbert

Franz-Olivier Giesbert, a great intellectual before the Eternal

present two new books, by two astrophysicists: J

ean-Pierre Luminet and Trinh Xuan Thuan, who have just published two books.

Despite these books, they consider the possibility of the existence of extraterrestrial life. Trinh Xuan Thuan estimates that there would be ten billion habitable planets in the hundred billion galaxies. Before these two speakers took the floor, Giesbert, whose intellectual depth and open-mindedness will be appreciated, presented the usual dossier that precedes any such appearance. The reader will appreciate it.

Timidly, Luminet dares to speak of "bacterial life," then of "intelligent life," then of the possible contact.

Another figure is also timidly mentioned by Trinh Xuan Thuan, under Giesbert's mocking gaze: the fact that a sufficiently developed intelligent life-supporting system could exist at ... 20 light-years away (which I personally think). The author recalls that we have sent a radio signal representing an attempt at contact and the presenter (could one call him a ... journalist?), still as mocking and sparkling with intelligence, says:

  • If I understand correctly, the aliens are listening to us right now ....

  • Yes, continue (courageously), Trinh Xuan Thuan, in the sense that the speech we are currently producing is relayed by electromagnetic waves, which travel through space, and which, in a finite time, could eventually be received and heard by a nearby extraterrestrial civilization. And if that civilization is 20 light-years away, they will receive this broadcast in twenty years.

You probably know that this service, created in 1977, is now directed by a new director, Yvan Blanc, an engineer. Below is the announcement of Yvan Blanc's appointment on the CNES website

Yvan Blanc, head of the GEIPAN since January 1, 2008

Jacques Patenet, head of the GEIPAN from July 1, 2005 to December 31, 2007

Jacques Patenet retired at the end of 2007. The GEPAN was created in 1977 by the polytechnician Yves Sillard, who, after having been president of CNES, moved to IFREMER (from space to the abysses), then to the DGA (General Delegation for Armaments). After this grand journey, retired, he worries about his child's new project, and adds a letter to his acronym, the GEPAN becoming the GEIPAN (Group for the Study and Information on Unidentified Aerial Phenomena). He endowed the service with a "steering committee" (without a pilot or an airplane) made up of some university professors at the end of their careers, without much talent or knowledge.

Five new years have passed. Count well: sixty months. And what has happened during all this time? Nothing, absolutely nothing. The service created a website, integrated into that of the CNES. The archives were scanned and put online. What do they contain? Nothing, just emptiness, reports from brave people sent to the field. Surreal.

The movement of inaction

Incompetence in action

Inspire you to watch the second interview given by Blanc in the media.

The interview of Blanc from February 2009, which "planks"

You will listen to the commentary, spoken by a female voice: "Out of the thousands of cases that the CNES has looked into over 33 years, only 2 or 3 deserve the name UFO."

Blanc regrets the lack of interest from scientists for his archives, despite their volume.

My reaction, upon seeing this document:

  • Finally, Patenet looked more lively than this one.

Is it important that this UFO issue be addressed seriously, in this troubled era we are living through, with all these clouds gathering? I think, personally, that this question is

major

. Some fools will immediately say that this position reflects some messianic expectation, of extraterrestrial saviors, capable of bringing us the solutions (technological) to all our problems. That's not how I see things. My way of seeing things, I have exposed in books

. I had thought to recall my thesis on this page. To avoid overloading, I put it in

link

.

A voice in the desert

If I compare the level of my reflections to the stupidity displayed by "intellectuals" like Guillaume Durand, Giesbert or "scientists" like Yvan Blanc, and I think about my age (nearly 73 years), my health, these 35 years that have passed, I can only be pessimistic about the possible elevation of the debate level.

  • The speech of Franz-Olivier Giesbert, and the lamentable mess that represents the dossier he had made to present his two speakers, is below the level of the documents of the same style that appeared in our media more than three decades ago, more than a generation.

  • The speech of engineer Yvan Blanc is below the level of the worst performances of this other scientist-intellectual, his predecessor Jean-Jacques Vélasco.

  • "Scientific ufology" continues to wallow in ridicule with theses like those of Claude Poher (the "universes").

Claude Poher, very pleased with himself, author of the "universes" theory

or the inconsistent and endless discussions of Jean-Marc Roeder (radio Ici et Maintenant).

Nevertheless, in 2008, this media mediocrity had an exception: the show presented by the young journalist Damien Hamouchi on the channel Direct8

Damien Hamouchi presenting "The Great Evening on UFOs" in 2008

Ihad some difficulty in finding archives to recover this show, piece by piece, in a disorderly way, on my machine after a long period of "blank" (actually a black screen). You have to be patient.

Some details on how this show came to life. The young Damien Hamouchi, 28 years old, contacted me at the beginning of 2008, expressing his desire to make a show on the UFO topic. I initially refused. He insisted, insisted. I finally told him:

  • It would be possible to do something a bit structured, if you followed my advice.

He did so and I leave you to judge the quality of this show, a real pearl in the general mess. What Hamouchi didn't know is that when I went on the set, I had equipped myself with a tiny microphone, connected to an MP3 recorder, carefully hidden. I was therefore able to record everything that was said on the set. Indeed, during the previous show (L'Arène de France, by Stéphane Bern), major cuts had been made. I had only come on this set to announce the creation of the UFO-science association, an announcement that had disappeared during the editing, among other things.
