Professional answers to a citizen reaction

Compared to other excesses of a delirious medicalization (obstetric ultrasounds, mammographies, HPV vaccines, prostate cancer screening...), the situation with the "swine flu" is marked by a clear and welcome discrepancy between the authorities' discourse and the majority of citizens' skepticism.

When the Diplomatic World magazine of September 2009 rightly deplores the "popular discouragement" in the face of politics being subjugated to the forces of money, this acute discrepancy makes it all the more hopeful that a democratic awakening will occur, just after a major economic crisis, which in its own way also marked the divorce between the blindness of the dominant discourse ("the foundations of the economy are sound," "the state is not the solution: it is the problem") and the painful perception of a majority of citizens (including the work-suicides) who experience day by day that, really, things could not continue at this pace...

During a recent broadcast (Arrêt sur images, 04/09/09) to which I was invited, one of the participants claimed that regarding the swine flu,

the population's calm was due to the press "having done its job well."

This is strictly false: the press, for the most part, was carried away in a whirlwind of less and less critical reporting, and the discrepancy mentioned above is precisely reflected in the ironic or annoyed reactions that the media's majority docility provokes among readers or viewers.

The population is not "calm," it is exasperated by this outburst of alarmism.

And it is this exasperation that deserves to be interpreted. In this case, people perceive the manipulation they are subjected to all the more because they are also afraid of the preventive inventiveness of the authorities. Fear for the money of their taxes and contributions, of course, but also

fear for their health or that of their loved ones and children

: more advanced on this issue (as on many others) than their political representatives, they no longer believe that vaccines are harmless panaceas - especially not these new vaccines that the industry is hastily multiplying to compensate for the loss of revenue it would suffer otherwise from its lamentable inability to innovate.
