I am a professional firefighter and in August last year, the Francilien fire support columns were engaged in the south of the country at the height of the crisis. It is very difficult to see clearly in this alarmist noise, whether it is about the spread of avian flu or threats of terrorist attacks. Regarding the first subject, I have only reproduced the different articles that have appeared over the months, which my readers have generally appreciated. The consequences of terrorist attacks in France would be easy to imagine. The state of emergency could be declared, with the possibility for the security forces to search anyone's home without notice. Entire regions could be evacuated, rightly or wrongly. Unjustified measures could be taken, while during the Chernobyl incident it was about "non-measures." The surveillance of citizens could be generalized, as well as the monitoring or beating of the net. A "Patriot Act" in the French style could then emerge.
More than ever, democratic citizens must keep their eyes open, try to inform themselves as much as possible and remain vigilant.
How to find the balance between alarmism and blindness?
There remains the impression of a constant drift towards more inequalities, more incompetence, more laissez-faire. We no longer govern, we manipulate, we try to impress or seduce.
