Andrei Sakharov and MHD
Sakharov and MHD
June 2, 2006
Andrei Sakharov was the great pioneer of Russian MHD. E. Velikhov, whom I knew well, was his student. Here is a recent photo of the latter, who was vice-president of the Russian Academy of Sciences and who now leads the legendary Kurtchatov Institute of High Temperatures (Kurtchatov was the father of the Russian A-bomb, while Sakharov was the father of the H-bomb).

When Sakharov was still facing the harassment of the former USSR, scientists from all countries united to make known, in different languages, the wide range of his scientific work. In France, these were published in 1984 in the following book, published by Anthropos:
(a publishing house that has disappeared, a book that is now unavailable)
The book includes, among other things, Sakharov's work on twin universes (1967). It also contains a chapter devoted to MHD, a discipline he developed from the 1950s.

This document has historical value. We will refer to it frequently. Indeed, I believe that very important research will emerge in the immediate future, the starting point of which is represented by these studies, initiated as early as the 1950s, on magnetic accumulators using explosives as the primary energy source.
