The reality of synthetic images

En résumé (grâce à un LLM libre auto-hébergé)

  • A video showing tornadoes was analyzed and declared to be computer-generated images.
  • Computer-generated images have become so realistic that they are difficult to distinguish from reality.
  • The article discusses the implications of virtual reality technology and its ability to deceive perception.

A video appeared on the web. Watch it:

Storm

Impressive, isn't it? Could it be ... reality? We know that in the United States, there are extremely destructive tornadoes, generating winds of 400 km/h. At one point, you see cars flying like straw and even a semi-trailer lifted from the ground. A tornado can cross a city and leave nothing but debris in its wake. Is it ... unrealistic? No, these things are indeed real. We have known this for a long time. Americans who live in the path of these tornadoes all have a basement shelter under their houses, topped with a solid steel door. Very often, families emerge and find no trace of their house, completely pulverized. We also know that there are tornado chasers who take risks by approaching these monsters and that a vehicle is certainly not a shelter.

So, if these sequences are potentially "realistic," are they really real? Do you find people in the USA who are crazy enough to run around at a hundred meters from such monsters, continuing to film?

I was obviously asked this question. I then watched this video with special effects experts and the answer came.

*These are just "excellent" 3D computer-generated images. And here's why. *

In this video, you see two reckless people who are excited, pointing at a tornado passing beyond a grove of trees.

zigoto1

Behind this "reckless" person, a tornado is approaching **

zigoto2

Another "reckless" person who is delighted by this spectacle.

She approaches:

then jumps over the vegetation without tearing off a single branch or leaf ...

ouragan3

*There it is, the tornado has safely passed through the tree line: *

ouragan4

But our "first reckless person" is sucked into the tornado:

ouragan5

We know that tornadoes carry debris flying at high speed. Few have been sucked in and survived.

Let's continue to explore this video:

You got it: it's not credible. Said my friends experts: it's too well done. This adds to the previous mistake, where those who created this sequence forgot to represent the tree that explodes into pieces as the tornado passes.

The last sequence shows the daredevils running next to a fire tornado. These images are also "realistic," as is the final image "shot from a helicopter." Fires stimulate tornadoes by intensifying the updraft. This has been observed and even filmed. But not with people running just a few tens of meters ...

September 26, 2016: confirmation. Reported by M. Montmory. It is the movie BLACK STORM released in 2014

Having a copy of the movie, he determined that the sequences correspond to:

Photo 1: exactly at 50 minutes and 42 seconds
Photo 2: exactly at 50 minutes and 44 seconds
Photo 3, 4 and 5: exactly at 50 minutes and 46 seconds
Photo 6: exactly at 50 minutes and 49 seconds
Photo 7: exactly at 50 minutes and 58 seconds
Photo 8: exactly at 52 minutes and 21 seconds
Photo 9: exactly at 52 minutes and 24 seconds

MORAL OF THIS STORY:

I remember the first computer-generated images, in the mid-1970s. What a long way we've come! Having experimented with these techniques at the time, I know exactly how all this is created. The difference is in the computing power: speed and multiplicity of processors. Forty years later, it's to the point where it takes the eye of a specialist to detect the flaw. For such a sequence, how many people are needed to create it? Verdict of the experts: twenty full-time people for three months, only! And it's a nice job, according to them. We can assume that it will illustrate yet another disaster film from across the Atlantic, after meteorite falls, tsunamis, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions.

Let's project ourselves into the near future. In a few years, these techniques will progress. One day, it will become very problematic to distinguish the real from the fake. Then, it won't take much intelligence to imagine that we will be able to create an infinite number of fake riots, fake wars, fake bombings, fake catapults from aircraft carriers, fake anything. We already know how to imitate human voices. We will be able to make people who are already dead speak, make anyone say anything. Instead of talking about "virtual reality," we will talk about "virtual truth."

But isn't this already happening with our television and what appears here and there on the web, including this video?

History is nothing more than a series of lies that follow one after another. Our world is experiencing a planetary crisis. Our politicians are corrupt, they are puppets. Our ministers are clowns. We have the worst President of the Republic we have ever had. With him, the left no longer exists. Hollande is a "topple," those little toys that represent plastic characters that cannot be knocked down because they are weighted and immediately right themselves.

Sarkozy has forgotten that he destabilized Libya, at the advice of his thought master, the inventor of disposable thinking, the inescapable BHL. Do you know how many French soldiers are currently in Afghanistan? 3,400, who are fighting for the Americans, with the Canadians, the British, and the Germans. A "war against terrorism."

Last week I was in Paris, spending wonderful moments with a friend's five-year-old daughter. I was listening to this girl, who was preparing a snack with plastic plates and cakes. I was looking at this wonderful child and I was thinking that at the same time, other girls of the same age were dying under bombs or by the explosives of suicide bombers, or simply from ... hunger. In what world are we living? Re-watch the images of Hillary Clinton, about whom we have every right to wonder if she will be more dangerous than Trump. Charybdis or Scylla? Terrifying.

I have seen videos where fanatics of Allah cut throats with knives. Sometimes it's a thirteen-year-old boy, screaming "Allahu Akbar!" Others where women are stoned to death, buried up to their shoulders.

It's a nightmare, am I going to wake up? No ....

We are dying from our ideologies, our religions (because I put both in the same basket). Our sciences, as corrupt as the rest, are not much better, filled with Panglosses who tell us that everything is for the best in the best of all possible worlds. I think back to the phrase that was going around in May 1968:

*- God is dead, Marx is dead, and I myself don't feel very well. *

We need answers to the great questions of man. His place in the universe, on Earth. The purpose of life.

I have built my own answer, but I think it's like shouting into the desert ---
