לי סמולין, יליד ניו יורק, למד במכללת המפשייר ובאוניברסיטת הרווארד. הוא היה פרופסור באוניברסיטאות ייל, סירקיוז ופן סטייט, ושימש בתפקידים פוסט-דוקטורליים במכון ללימודים מתקדמים בפרינסטון, במכון לפיזיקה תיאורטית בסנטה ברברה, ובמכון אנריקו פרמי באוניברסיטת שיקגו. הוא גם היה פרופסור אורח בקולג' האימפריאלי בלונדון, ושהה באוניברסיטאות שונות: אוקספורד, קיימברידג', רומא, טרנטו ו-SISSA באיטליה.
תחומי עניין:
