New York'ta doğan Lee Smolin, Hampshire College ve Harvard Üniversitesi'nde eğitim aldı. Yale, Syracuse ve Penn State üniversitelerinde profesör olarak görev yaptı; Princeton'daki İleri Çalışmalar Enstitüsü, Santa Barbara'daki Teorik Fizik Enstitüsü ve Chicago Üniversitesi'ndeki Enrico Fermi Enstitüsü'nde doktora sonrası pozisyonlarda bulundu. Ayrıca Londra'daki Imperial College'da konuk profesör olarak görev yaptı ve Oxford, Cambridge, Roma, Trento ve İtalya'daki SISSA gibi çeşitli üniversitelerde bulundu.

"Kuantum yerçekimi", Einstein'in genel görelilik teorisi ile kuantum teorisinin birleştirilmesine yönelik girişimdir. Kuantum mekaniğinin temelleri, kozmoloji, temel parçacık fiziği, astrofizik ve "teorik biyoloji" ile de ilgilenmektedir.
