It's time for ecology. A look at the Larousse, always within reach:

We are living beings. Therefore, we fall under ecology. We are both those who conduct these studies and ... the object of these studies, one of the objects, one of the components, and not the least discreet.

There is no need to look far, on the net, to find avalanches of videos explaining that we, human beings, who had started to "take the lead" on Earth 200,000 years ago, while life is supposed to have appeared there four and a half billion years ago, that is more than twenty times earlier, we are currently ravaging all the biotopes, exhausting all the resources, the horizon of this exhaustion being less than a century from our time.

Moreover, we are multiplying. When I was a kid, we were taught at school that there were 5 billion human beings on Earth. Today it seems to be seven. Tomorrow, nine, twelve, etc....

There is no need to have done solid studies to realize that we have reached a growth rate (which mathematicians call exponential) that is beyond any control.

Question: what is a reasonable number of human beings who can live comfortably on a planet like ours? Would one dare to ask this question today? Here is the map of fertility rates on the planet. It is clearly visible that there are hotspots in terms of demographics and "cold regions" in decline (possibly compensated by a high immigration, legal or illegal). The fertility rate is the raw measure of the capacity for growth of a given population. It is clear that the most violent demographic "hotspots" are located "in the south", in poor countries, which will not surprise anyone. Africa is the main demographic hotspot of the planet. I see some people saying right away: it's the general rule in Muslim countries! Well, no. There are exceptions. In Iran, the fertility rate is 1.8, in Turkey: 2.2, same in Turkmenistan.

The consequences of demographic policies are felt in the long term. A country that slows its population growth (and at the same time, life expectancy increases, with the improvement of medical care) sees its population age. The phenomenon presents considerable inertia. In 1950, 7.5% of the population in China was over 60. In 2005, this percentage rose to 11%. As an indication, this percentage of people over 60 is 6% in India and 17.3% in Europe.

I am like you: I have vaguely heard of it, I explore, I discover. The figures are staggering, while the overall curve of the Earth's population growth is exponential. Russia loses 500,000 inhabitants every year, simply due to the non-renewal of generations and the aging of the female population who are no longer able to reproduce.

*- Urbanization, "living in tight spaces", the absence of need to have young arms to work the land, now mechanized. The profession of farmer is becoming less and less profitable. Fifty percent of the population lives in urban areas. *

Half of the increase in births is due to foreign mothers. I quote:

This poses a real problem: when should one die? At what age?

Medical advances, and in some countries the improvement of the quality of life, are such that life expectancy is increasing more and more. But when one lives in a rich country, has a comfortable pension, a roof: at what age should one reasonably consider clearing the floor of the cows? Personally, having recently turned 72, I can't imagine being a centenarian, I don't have the profile at all, I think.

Aldous Huxley wrote his wonderful book "Brave New World" in 1931, in which he describes a world where the end of life is managed with increasing doses of a drug called "soma," which eliminates all stress.
