Paranormal vs. Artifacts

October 14, 2002

Part two.

When hunting for the unusual, one needs at least some training in illusionist techniques; otherwise, one gets fooled quite easily. The most impressive tricks are those where it’s the subject himself who performs the actions. Let’s give a few examples. During a rather lively conversation we had at a restaurant, Mr. D mentioned that “reality might just be a form of illusion.” I immediately demonstrated this to him. He was holding a glass marble in his hand (perhaps “materialized” by his Mexican medium). I asked him to close his eyes, then to cross his fingers as described below. Finally, I asked him to roll the marble that I placed under his fingers, also as described. The following illustrations are taken from my comic strip “The Thousand and One Scientific Nights”; readers can download it for free from the Savoir Sans Frontières website:

– How many marbles are there?
– Two. You added a second one, replied Mr. Dray.

Try this experiment with your eyes closed. You’ll see that you can’t even rely on your own sense of touch!
