Two employees of the British and French navies, Mr. Vanguard and Mr. Triomphant, carrying vials containing anthrax bacteria in their pockets, bumped into each other in a completely dark corridor. Both had turned off their flashlights to avoid being spotted, relying on their keen hearing to detect any approaching night wanderers. But since they were both walking on tiptoes, neither heard the other coming. The collision occurred at low speed, thankfully causing no damage to their dangerous cargo.

Following the lecture I gave on March 9, 2009 at École Polytechnique (X)
Confirmed: The Americans indeed withhold information regarding results obtained on the ZR machine after the 2008 tests. The French do and will nothing. Result of pressure exerted by the Megajoule and ITER lobbies and... incomprehension. Military caution. Deafening silence in science media, which follow instructions (but anyway don’t understand either the approach or its implications.)
There’s no deafer person than one who doesn’t want to understand.
(A full report, currently being written, will appear in the press in a few weeks.)

Odd incident: During an international congress on hypersonic flight, a retired former CNRS researcher ran over an aviation journalist with his wheelchair; the journalist had claimed on a Quebec radio station that he’d passed off a hang-gliding accident as a work-related injury to get a pension.

Authentic

The author of this is aviation journalist Bernard Thouanel. Below is the end of a lengthy insulting email he sent me on November 22, 2009.

To conclude with your story about Claude Poher. I fully confirm he told me your story on the phone. I see no reason why he would invent such nonsense. I had absolutely no intention of making it public, as I felt it was irrelevant personally. And if you actually had a hang-gliding accident and found the fall of an electromagnet more poetic, that was your problem, not mine. François Bourbeau somewhat pressured me into confirming this fact via his radio station. I bear him no grudge; he’s Québécois and, unlike you, honest...
I have nothing else to add.

Some explanations seem necessary for the reader. We reassembled the “cosmology” team with Gilles d’Agostini, theoretical physicist (treasurer of Savoir Sans Frontières; see his photo on http://www.savoir-sans-frontieres.com, where he resembles explorer Paul-Émile Victor against an ice floe background). The other member is my old friend Pierre Midy, retired, with whom I discussed math on the phone yesterday for an hour. We decided to “get back in the game.” The yellow paper the guy holds is the change of “chronological variable” invented by Eddington in 1924; it can be found at the start of Chapter 7, page 237 in Adler, Schiffer and Bazin’s book: “Introduction to General Relativity”, McGraw Hill editions. Actually, this stems from a tip from the Ummites, received in Madrid during a conversation with engineer Dominguez, who’d recently spoken to them on the phone about the nonexistence of black holes. Their existence depends solely on an arbitrary choice of time coordinate, the “chronological variable.” The yellow paper is the variable change devised in 1924 by Sir Arthur Eddington, a key figure in theoretical astrophysics.

In 1919 he led the team observing an eclipse to verify Einstein’s theory on light deflection by mass. He was the first to suggest stars obtain energy via fusion. He also studied relations between physical constants from a dimensional analysis standpoint. Also a great popularizer. The humorous drawing above was suggested by my old friend Jacques Legalland, designer of the 5 kV power supply used at Rochefort for MHD experiments. Where on earth did he find such a peculiar variable change? Nobody knows...

One of my readers pointed out that one of my drawings was used, with text altered. Originally it was:

Now, on a website and blog I’ll let you search for, this drawing appears, reproduced and modified without my permission:

If you find drawings like this online, know that these reproductions are done without my knowledge.
I have my own political views, and I don’t hesitate to express them openly. I act as a polemicist. Just look at the drawing right before these two to be convinced.
But I deny anyone the right to associate themselves with their own speeches and actions using my own illustrations, modified or even copied as-is. They should find their own illustrators.

The first theorem of metaphysics:
Any celestial body immersed in a celestial fluid receives an upward thrust equal to the weight of the displaced celestial matter.
Imagine a celestial fluid whose density decreases with altitude, and suppose the celestial body doesn’t expand when ambient pressure drops. If the density of the body, initially at ground level, is less than that of its surroundings, it will rise. Its ascent stops when its mass equals that of the surrounding medium of equal volume; in other words, when both densities become equal.
Of course, if the body’s density exceeds that of its surroundings at ground level, it won’t rise. We then say it remains in the lower celestial realm.
